Recalls due to safety concerns are certainly a red-hot issue within the automobile industry. News channels never fail to have a handful of raging headlines over faulty tech and bad car parts, making it necessary for the automobile giants to do recalls. In fact, according to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), the automobile industry did more than 15 million recalls among the cars that it had sold (22 million). Mercedes air conditioning problems are just one of many of these recalls.

When you buy a Mercedes-Benz, you expect a high-end vehicle for the premium price you spend. You don’t expect to deal with mechanical malfunctions and safety concerns. Yet, the Mercedes Benz C Class made it to the top of the most recalled SUVs in the USA during the time period 2013-2017. Out of the 15 automobiles surveyed, iSeeCars.com found that Mercedes had discovered HVAC problems in its cars, with 2.1 million recalled vehicles among the 5.2 million sold, a whopping 0.41 recall rate because of HVAC problems alone!

Another unfortunate Mercedes car consumer took to Reddit to share their problems related to the HVAC systems in their car:

“Mercedes won’t fix the musty smell from HVAC. On the 8th month of ownership, I started smelling a musty moldy smell through the AC vents. This gets aggravated and can be prominently smelled during the first 30 seconds of start.”

Mercedes Air Conditioning Recall

The German automobile manufacturer initially ignored any statements made by the consumers complaining about the HVAC systems claiming that it had nothing to do with faulty assembly of the cars. However, Mercedes agreed to do recalls and provide repairs based on any wrongdoings on its behalf.

In response to an NHTSA inquiry related to the recalls, a Mercedes spokeswoman said

“Obviously, the safety of our customers is our highest priority. We make every effort to ensure our recall campaigns and customer notifications are executed in a timely manner. We will work closely with NHTSA on this audit query to address any concerns it has.”

Mercedes HVAC Settlement

All of the complaints helped consumers get everything they deserved. The recalls were followed by a class action lawsuit against the automobile giant.

The final verdict was provided on September 11, 2020, with a Mercedes class action lawsuit settlement granted by the Court to resolve the problem. Mercedes agreed to provide two benefits to Class consumers with problems related to the HVAC in their car systems. The settlement includes the following two benefits:

Cash reimbursement for all the costs related to the repairs associated with the HVAC problems in their Mercedes cars, such as mildew, mold or odors emanating from their ventilation systems – the reimbursement will also involve a payback for costs related to the repairs made on the evaporator and replacing the filters;
Since the settlement is not capped, Mercedes is also liable to pay for any costs made in the future due to any of the reasons mentioned in point (1);

In addition to the current and future reimbursements, the Court settlement resolved issues for past repairs made before May 11, 2020, which were to be made no later than July 25, 2020, through an Online reimbursement form. Fortunately, for any repairs on Mercedes HVAC systems made during the time period between May 11, 2020, and December 07, 2020, consumers could have filed a claim for reimbursement using the same online reimbursement form. However, the date to file these forms has passed, so consumers can no longer use this tool.

Since the Mercedes recalls due to HVAC involved various other models than the Mercedes Benz C-Class, such as the 2008-2019 C-Class, 2015-2019 GLA Class, etc, the class action lawsuit settlement covers all the cars as mentioned (in order of model years):

Mercedes C – Class (model years 2008-2019)
GLA – Class (model years 2015-2019)
GLE – Class (model years 2016-2019)
GLS – Class (model years 2017-2019)
GLC – Class (model years 2016-2019)
CLS – Class (model years 2012-2017)
GL – Class (model years 2013-2016)
M – Class (model years 2012-2015)
GLK – Class (model years 2010-2015)

If you are a Mercedes Class consumer of any of the above mentioned vehicles, you’re automatically subject to an additional ten-year birthday of your Mercedes car with any reimbursement due to the HVAC problems automatically applicable to deal with in the future. However, the online form is no longer available to file for reimbursement.

New Mercedes Cars Experiencing Air Conditioning Problems

While the above Mercedes-Benz vehicles are the only ones involved in this class-action lawsuit, there are plenty more experiencing problems. They may not yet be involved in air conditioning recalls, but RepairPal still lists plenty of malfunctions.

Here’s one example of a complaint listed with the NHTSA for the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC.

“My 2021 GLC300 Mercedes is experiencing [the] exact same issues as described in the Mercedes HVAC Class Action Settlement even though the settlement only covers vehicle models up to 2019. I have been a loyal Mercedes customer for over 20 years and took in the vehicle 4 times to address the bad HVAC odor that occurs 3 to 4 times a day when I turn on the HVAC. It has a moldy, mildew-y, or similar odor emanating from the vehicle’s HVAC system. The dealership admitted they did smell the odor but there is nothing they can do to address it after they changed the air filters and cleaned the evaporator coil. I then escalated to MBUSA Escalation team to request a full refund or replacement based on the Arizona Lemon Law statute and they were of no assistance and completely denied my request stating that the vehicle is working as intended…Based on my observation this is still happening in Mercedes vehicle models 2020 and newer.”

There were no early indicators prior to this incident.”

As for electrical problems, recent complaints have included the the electronic stability control: “DRIVING ON MAJOR HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH, CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER WITH NO WARNING OTHER THAN A MESSAGE ON DASH ‘PARKING BRAKE MAY TEMPORARILY BE UNAVAILABLE’, CAR DID NOT SHUT OFF BUT GAS PEDAL UNRESPONSIVE. PULLED OVER, TURNED OFF CAR, RESTARTED, PUT IN DRIVE, CAR DID NOT MOVE. NEW MESSAGE: SERVICE TRANS, PRESS BRAKE WHEN STOPPED, KEY OFF ENGINE TO ENGAGE PARK. PREVIOUS TWO DAYS, HAD TROUBLE ,TOOK 4 TRY’S TO START CAR FROM KEY FOB. CAR HAS 30391 MILES, I HAVE OWNED IT 2 MONTHS. HAD TO BE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP.”

The simple answer is yes, but it will cost you a lot in gas. Also, driving while cognizant of check fuel fill inlet warning could significantly harm the car and potentially cause an accident. Where is the fuel fill inlet located?

It is the opening where you insert the gas nozzle to refuel your car. In most vehicles, this fuel inlet is hidden by your gas door, which you must open to access the cap. The inlet is connected to the fuel tank via a pipe hidden inside your car’s chassis.

What is EVAP?

The Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) System seals ensure no pollutants escape from the fuel tank and fuel system into the environment. The importance of this system cannot be emphasized enough since fuel vapors contain a diverse range of hydrocarbons.

Smog is created when hydrocarbons come into contact with sun and air. Because gasoline evaporates quickly, a vehicle with its fuel system exposed to the atmosphere can emit unwanted gasses throughout the day, even when not used. These uncontrolled pollutants contribute significantly in a vehicle’s pollution rating.

What is a fuel inlet restrictor?

A fuel inlet restrictor is a plate that prevents leaded fuel from being poured into an unleaded-powered vehicle. When both forms of fuel are still used in the vehicle, an inlet restrictor is installed. However, leaded fuel was later banned by regulators making this tool unnecessary, and manufacturers phased it out after a while. This means that it cannot be the cause of your problems.

The capless fuel system and fuel fill inlet; are they the same?

These two expressions have the same meaning. Despite being “capless,” the system still employs caps and flaps to prevent fuel leakage. The only difference is that it opens up when pushed with the fuel nozzle, while the cap system needs you to unscrew or twist the gas lid. As a result, the terms “check fuel fill inlet” (capless and non-capless) refer to the same fuel leakage problem.

Honda Civic, CR-V and Accord Recalls

Honda Motor Company Ltd. is a multinational conglomerate Japanese Corporation primarily manufacturing and supplying automobiles, motorcycles and power equipment around the world. It has a very large market base in almost all parts of the world. However, like every other vehicle Honda also has its own shares of errors and fatalities in design, workmanship, parts and materials.

Honda has its largest market base for its cars and SUVs in North America and therefore the production plant of SUVs and other Honda automobiles for the US market is also based within North America. Multiple reports have emerged from the Honda Civic, Honda CR-V and Honda Accord users.

The CR-V is not the perfect SUV, but no other SUV is. The CR-V has been in the SUV competition game for a long time with its high durability, modern cut designs and feasible costs. Whereas various consumers of the Honda Civic have reported instances of sudden or even complete failures of the engine. Yet many other Civic consumers have mentioned instances of random illumination or warning indicators that do not have a relation with a real mechanical fault. On the other hand, Honda Accord, also known as one of the finest, premier models of Honda Company has its own share of hundreds of consumers on the roads of Americas. Yet even the premier Accord has seen electrical and engine problems in the 2013-2018 models. This article discusses the common issues in Honda automobiles and how they may possible be affecting a driver’s driving experience.

Source of Engine Problems in Automobiles

There may be various scientific reasons why a car engine fails or misbehaves – it may be a defect with the vehicle, parts or destruction of one or more of the engine sub-parts. Some of the main parts of modern engines include engine blocks, pistons and valves, camshaft, timing belt, gaskets, spark plugs, connecting rods, crankshaft and of course, the piston rings.

There are also many factors that are interrelated with the engines and may effect its functionality such as fuel system, oxygen sensors, cooling systems, oil and lubrication. Together all these engine systems and its sub equipment are designed to provide regular and consistent power through igniting and maintaining the fuel in the engine to power, in order to keep the wheels turning. So, defects in any one part could cause a hierarchy effect on the whole system and cause the engine to stop working.

Most consumers are unable to pinpoint or diagnose the reason behind the throttles, start-stop problems of engines, etc. However, some common signs of a Honda Lemon may include rising smoke from the trunk, extreme throttles on ignition, braking, or rough rides etc. Some common engine problems in Honda automobiles are as follows:

Honda Civic Air Conditioning Recall

The Honda Civic is the most popular among the middle-class consumers in both the used and new car markets. It has a wide range of models including three body styles and 5 different trims to suit every consumer’s needs. However, this model had its share of failures and problems, especially with regards to its air conditioning.

Models from 2006 had the worst case of problems, however, 2013 and newer models also reported a few functionality errors. The engine problems in Civic included cracked engine blocks – If a cracked engine leaks excessive coolant above a minimal level, then the car can over heat and fail completely. Fortunately, Honda was aware of this problem and so, they extended the Civic’s engine warranty up to 10 years.

However, the warranty period has now passed for the 2006 models, and for many others whose 10 year warranty period is over, the consumers have to pay a repairing cost of up to $3000 for a new engine block.

Another common engine problem in Civic models is bad engine mounting, which causes intense vibration in the steering wheels. This is a relatively inexpensive fix at $100, but frequent failures could be a headache for consumers, including the time and effort required for each fix, in addition to the journey to the showroom/repair shops.

Honda CR-V Recall

The CR-V drivers suffer frequent horror stories of the phantom check engine light that appears on their cluster display. The light comes on at random times and only in some cases, disappears on its own. The rest of the sufferers have to make a visit to the mechanics, who also struggle to find out the source of the uncalled for phantom check engine lights. While many mechanics do end up fixing the problem, the light reappears in many cases years later.

Another common problem is the emission standards light which is also a phantom light – this also appears in error, has to be fixed by a mechanic with an effort of three to four hours. Then, unfortunately, in a few cases, the light also re-returns in three to four days again.

Some other common problems in the CR-V include the hood smelling of gasoline after driving. The oil levels also rise after driving which indicate that the oil gets mixed up with gasoline which causes premature wear and tear of the engine and engine parts.

While other consumers also report of their CR-V engines stalling or losing power due to this issue. This in turn, causes delayed acceleration, which makes it easier to make a quick escape, or a dangerous pull out from heavy traffic.

Honda Accord Starter Recall

The beautiful Accord models have made their consumers a fair share of electrical and engine issues, particularly the 2013-2018 models. The most common issues with the 2013-2018 Accords included the starter failure after the basic 3 years warranty time. Consumers also widely reported the no-starts requiring the drivers to perform repeated attempts to ignite/start (Engine Start) before their Accord finally starts – if it even starts at all.

The Honda Accord consumers also report a clicking noise or flickering dash lights during the time engine is refusing to start. However, unlike the CR-V and Civic engine problems, the Honda Company has been unable to pinpoint the exact cause of the Accords Engine Start problem – this is due to the technicians inability to reproduce the no-start issue as it is an unreliable problem whose source of incidence is unknown. Hence, the Honda Company does not repair the issue in most cases.

The Accord Engine Problems often costs the consumer of up to $1000 for a new replacement starter in addition to the labor costs required to install it. In many other cases, the consumers also have to pay a diagnosis fee of $100 to the Honda Repair technicians who, even if unable to diagnose the cause, charge the fee each time the issue arises.

On another hand, while the Honda Motor America is aware of the issue, the technicians often misdiagnose the issue by dealership technicians or service advisors/mechanics, who often recommend a change of battery – which, again the consumer has to pay for if not covered by the warranty by Honda.

Other Honda problems frequently reported by consumers include:

Auto-braking feature engaging for no reason, or failing to engage;
Excessive pulsation and shuddering in the brakes when operating the vehicle on highway
speeds;
Premature daytime light burnout;
Headlight failure (which may cost consumers a $1000 in replacing headlights); Transmission
lunging, lurching, jumping, jerky shifting, or not functioning properly;
Leaking oil, water, fuel, coolant, or other fluids;
Engine issues and failure, loss of power, or sluggish performance;
Vibration in the axles, transmission, steering column, or brakes;
Electrical and computer system problems;
Brake failure and brake overheating;
Repeated check engine and other warning lights turning on;
Misalignment;
